Languages are great. I love them. I speak German, English, Swiss German, an alright French and a few words of Gaelic and Italian (really, only a few). I want to learn Spanish and Russian and maybe Dutch too.
Now, I do not know when I will find time to learn all these languages (I could make time by not learning maths), but anyway I have a lot of respect for all of them. Because they are all individually beautiful, even though Russian might sound quite rough and Spanish will always be spoken too fast to keep up with anyway.
Now, Germany is a nice country. It has nice people and plenty of things to do and see. Sometimes I have a problem with the mentality. Some of them seem to think that Austria and Switzerland are basically cheaper versions of Germany or belong to Germany. Some believe they adopted the German National Anthem, because they are not nation enough to have their own. And the language: It is obviously German, but an abomination of it.
I don’t think that’s fair. It makes me really sad, actually. Fancy telling a Swiss person to the face that Swiss German sounds like someone raped the German language?
Language is not just words and sounds and grammar. My language is my home. It helps me express myself, communicate, build friendships, find my orientation, understand. It’s something my family and friends speak, it’s an important part of my environment and I am proud of it. I have never heard of anyone who hates his own language.
I’m British, because my parents are, but I was born in Switzerland and I grew up there. The language means a lot to me. It’s a part of my identity.
Sometimes, when I’m sad or simply need a slight cheer-up I listen to Swiss music, just so I can hear the words.
Since moving to Germany about 3 years ago people have often express their disliking against the Swiss language. If they say, they don’t like it, that’s fine with me. I won’t force them. But lately there have been quite a few people who went quite far, claiming the Swiss have ruined the German language, raped it, that is sounds like a chainsaw or whatever.
Someone who will insult another persons language like that is simply ignorant and arrogant. Language is a part of us and it is not our right to judge.
We do not know what something might mean to someone else.
